Reno-Fernley HMSA Race - 2007

May 4-5, 2007 -- We attended an HMSA event near Reno, NV. The Reno-Fernley Raceway is about 30 miles east of Reno. It's a race track and facility, only about five years old. Our reason for attending was to "hang" with a special grid of H-Mod cars. Diane's Miller was originally an H-Mod car built by Don Miller (Calif.) in the mid-60s. At this event, one of the very first cars built by Don Miller, the builder of Diane's car, was at the event as well as "The Last Miller." Diane's car is very, very similar that "The Last Miller" so we're pretty sure it was one of the last he made, probably in about 1962.

  • We arrived at the track Friday morning for Test & Tune only to find snow on the ground. A cold, blustery day, but the track was dry and testing and practice wasn't effected.
  • This is Diane posing with Kip Fjeld who owns and races one of the very first Don Miller cars (front engined). It is quite original. Joe Puckett originally owned this car and raced it for many, many years.
  • On track with some of the H-Mods. Diane's car, now running a 1600 cc motor is no longer in the H-Mod class as they all run engines of less than 950cc. No contest, but great fun.
  • Another great picture of the H-Mods on track with Diane in the lead going up the big hill. Displacement rules.
  • One of the more famous H-Mods at the reunion. This is the famous Aardvark, now owned and raced by Don Racine.
  • A very, very nice H-mod. This is a Beach running an original Hilman Imp engine (and tranny?). John Rankin had just finished this car. It was BEAUTIFUL, and fast. He could almost stay with Diane even with his small displacement. Very, very impressive.
  • Another shot of the Beach H-Mod,
  • And, at speed.
  • HMSA turns out some seriously nice and fast cars. This was my favorite car in the whole paddock. It is a 2.0 Liter, four cylinder beauty and damn fast.
  • Speaking of serious and fast. Here is a nice sampling of cars which includes three Listers (two Jag-engined). There were seven Listers at this event. Amazing!!!!
  • Even though Di's Miller was no longer an H-Mod, they let her run in the reunion group. Due to her unfair advantage, she was fastest by far and gridded first.
  • Sunday after racing, the H-Mods were given the opportunity for an on-track photo-op.
  • And this time with the drivers in the pic.
  • All weekend there were flybys of some really neat vintage aircraft.
  • And who is this you ask? it is Jim Alder warming up with some soup. Jim races a Jaguar XK-120. We chatted several times during the weekend realizing that it was the first time either of us had ever met another Alder who wasn't kinfolk. Cool.
  • Oh Yes. I was there that weekend also. Ran the Alexis. Unfortunately, I was dead last in a very, very fast open wheel group. Got some work to do before I'm fast in this car.
  • Look familiar? One reason we went to this H-Mod reunion was a chance to see "The Last Miller." This car, owned by Franklin "Rudy" Rudolph, is the last car built by Don Miller and is clearly very, very similar to Diane's car. Amazing to see. Thanks to Tom Clayton for taking these photos of Rudy's very nice Miller.
  • "The Last Miller"
  • If you didn't know better, #207 could be Diane's Bobsy, car. But it is a similar Bobsy owned by Franklin "Rudy" Rudolph. Now for a "small world" moment. The white #98 car behind Rudy's Bobsy is a Tanner T5 Sports Racer owned by Gene Leasure, the same fellow who years later, in 2018, I purchase the Bobsy FF from.
  • "Rudy" has done a great job on this car. Neat instrument panel.
