1. Bobsy Registry - Restoration Projects

Tom Taff - 1964 Bobsy SR 3 , Serial #76411

It started life as an SR 2. but was converted to an SR-3 along the way. But it apparently always had the marvelous 1300 Lotus / Vegantune Twincam from its days in the midwest. Purchased from Doc Miller in 2018, it began the process of complete restoration. The photos tell the story of bringing another sweet Bobsy back to life on the track again.

BEFORE!!! Lots of bits.

  • BEFORE!!! Lots of bits.
  • This is what I started with…. Note the sturdy aluminum roll bar!
  • Preparing to cut off Aluminum Roll bar, and weld a hundred or so holes. Note plywood fuel tank mock up behind seat.
  • The old dash and Go Kart wheel with new steel roll bar, seat, and newly designed fuel cell behind the seat.
  • Lots of new panels make it look like a car again.
  • Redesigned front and aluminum radiator mounting and body supports
  • Fuse block and wiring going in and cockpit firewall and panels being fitted. Formed new pod for Tach to view through steering wheel.
  • New front bulkhead / dash and instrument surround. Lots of one off hand built bits, and stronger mount for contemporary race seat. And new STEEL Rollbar.
  • Bulkheads and body supports rebuilt and attached along with new floor panels. All suspension mounts reinforced and or bushed.
  • New nose and aluminum radiator easily removable with a few screws in Rivnuts. This saved a couple of pounds.
  • Trial fitting tranny with sectioned rear bulkhead. New shocks and springs saved a few important pounds. Oil tank and filter mount Fitted along with new 4 piston calipers similar to the original Airhart brakes. Shock and suspension mounts reinforced. New body mount.
  • New 3/16 runners and custom seat mounts. Fuel tank fits just like the wooden model.
  • Pedal box rebuilt with new bias bar, and redesigned throttle linkage. Tach and gauges in place, fire bottle mounted forward.
  • Nose opened and aluminum plenum fitted to mate with new front radiator sheet metal.
  • Finally suspension and brakes and time to refit the engine and transmission. Rear bulkhead was sectioned to allow easier install.
  • Frame is stripped and two trusty friends help with the task of polishing the entire frame.
  • Looking like a racer again, but still al Long way to go.
  • Getting anxious and taped temporary numbers to run a local race, but clutch issues did not allow.
  • Yes, this is how they got 2 seats in the 32 inch wide cockpit before the rules made minimum cockpit with requirements.
  • Finally in race trim and running on a beautiful spring day at Eagles Canyon Raceway.
